Thanks for this, I ran into the “um how do I get a library item to the stage?” problem the other day and spent way too long fishing…1+1+1+1=4… through the flash docs looking for the answer. I have to agree with you, the new docs are way to techy. every time I look through them, I long for the days of AS2 doc readin

I didn’t started with AS 3.0 until now for the same reason… the documentation is “a bit techy”
So… thank you for those files!! :)

Hello. I would really like to learn actionscript. I’ve had a good old fiddle with flash throughout my life and now is the time to (try and ) progress. How do you people suggest I go out learning AS3 from scratch? I realise it’s gonna be a long journey…

    this is perfect for me
    many thanks MR.D

[…] import flash.events.MouseEvent; reload_mc.buttonMode = true; reload_mc.addEventListener (MouseEvent.CLICK, reloadListener); function reloadListener ($event:MouseEvent) { trace (’onRelease AS3::reload button’) } Brendan Dawes created files that helped me a lot, as3 for lazy bastards like me, and I probably will write about the same thing… But people who travel trough AS3 land will probably meet the same problems… These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. As I’ve been exploring the wonderful Flash CS3 (Flash 9 to you and me) I’ve had to spend quite a bit of time scratching my head finding the new ways to do things that I always took for granted.

Where’s loadMovie gone? What do you mean there’s no getURL - I loved that method - in fact we regularly went on holiday together (there was this wild time in Vegas, but that’s another story). Only now it’s gone, along with many other much loved binary friends.

While Adobe have done a wonderful job with their help documentation, it still takes time to dig through and find exactly what you’re looking for. And yes I know there are cheat sheets out there for this kind of as2 - as3 migration, but personally I’ve found them a bit techy for my taste. So I thought it might be useful to put a few files together for the rest of us, all named with their old skool method names so you can quickly find and then more importantly see the differences between old skool and new skool.

When I get time, and as I discover more stuff that I think might be helpful, I’ll do a part two, but for now the following download just covers off some basic, though much used methods in everyday Flash construction - loadMovie, getURL, setInterval and attachMovie.
