    Beautiful, and great idea!

very interesting stuff… but I’m not a Mac user :(

Dude, it’s a nice poster, but since it heavily & stylistically relies on the amazingly versatile Pixie Nodebox plugin, it’d have been only fair to at least give it some credit or at least mention it. That’s least thing one would expect of an open source user!

    it's the principle /

that’s cool - like I said this thing was just a way for me to start to get to know Nodebox. Pixie is indeed very cool, but I need to get some time in to explore what it can do rather than the default “look like Pixie” output. Apologies if I’ve offended anyone for not making that clear. All I’m trying to do is get more people into Nodebox.

Now the new book is all done and dusted I have a bit more time to explore some of the cool new toys I’ve been wanting to play with for a while. One that I mentioned a few months ago is the fabulous NodeBox.

NodeBox is a free Mac application that allows you to explore code based generative art and graphic design using the Python programming language. Your creations can then be exported as a PDF or a series of PDFs and even QuickTime movies - yes it can do animations too. While it’s not an application for building interactive projects as such, the stuff you can make is really fantastic. There’s also a growing library of, er, libraries that add additional functionality such as interacting with Google and other cool things.

As a little test, and as a way of getting to know NodeBox, I’ve created a special souvenir poster for the upcoming Flashforward featuring all the names of all the speakers. Download this A2 size tif file, unzip, print, and hang on your wall. Or if you’re attending Flashforward in Austin, print it out, get it signed by all the speakers and sell it on Ebay!

Oh- if you have Default Folder installed make sure you disable it for NodeBox - otherwise it will throw an error when you try to export anything - drove me nuts for a few hours until I figured it out.
