Brendan: I ‘ll be looking forward to it. Do you have any files to look at that will give me a sneak peak at what you’ll be speaking on?

    Thanks, David

so what happens if you run monk’s work through the processing project?
i have to admit, i’ve caught the processing bug a while ago, after reading about it first over here. don’t have much time to play with it, but it’s certainly an empowering tool.

I’ll have to try running Monk through it, but before I do I’m working on a newer version so it interprets the sound a lot better than it does currently. Also looking at postscript output for giant print outs!

    Hey David,

I’m still working on a bunch of files, fine tuning and the like. You can always check out the source for CInema Redux which is on the Processing site via the exhibition area. If I have anything else I’ll let you know.

Monk kicks ass, and i dig the concept your working on

Music is the opposite of children: It should be heard and not seen. :) Watch your back — Jean Michel-Jarre will probably steal this idea from you for his next revival tour.

That damian rice movie is superb..

The texture and shape of the paint splats. looks very organic. *thumbs up*

Thanks Chris. I’m really trying to make this stuff look less digital and like you say more organic. Right now I’m also trying to fit the visuals to the music more. So for instance I’ve just been working on one that uses Portishead together with some dark, moody, scratchy visuals.

I’ll be speaking in New York at Flashforward about “Twisting Data” and how Jazz, and particularly people like Thelonious Monk are a constant source of inspiration for a lot of my work. What I love about Monk is how he experimented with the composition of a song, putting notes in places that shouldn’t be there, altering the timing etc. He was a master of data twisting and experimentation, taking something and exploring were it can go. So if you’re attending Flashforward I’ll be showing my take on it, using not just Flash but PHP, XML and Processing. The piece below shows a few images generated by a Processing project that creates graphics from sound frequency analysis, in this case John Coltrane’s Blue Train.
