    Nice one Bren.
I’ve been trying to get my head around this stuff too. I saw your posts on Processing and wondered how you were getting on. Nice to see you have something working.

Did you buy the kit from that site or do you know a UK supplier?

Will we start to see physical computing art installations from magneticN now then? ;)

Unfortunately I couldn’t find a UK supplier so I bought it straight off the site - came in a few days though! I’m sure there must be a UK supplier somewhere.

As for magneticN art installations - let’s just say watch this space!

    Brendan, your a maniac ( I mean that in a good way ;-) )
What is next, a magic 8 ball connected to an xml feed off of the NASDAQ? Thanks for sharing your project*

For my A level Technology project thing (back in the day) I made a winamp controller to plug into my pc’s serial port which used a basic stamp chip.

I managed to get 6 button functionality into the controller with enough space left over on the chip to write a nightrider led style swoosh thing, which quickly became my favourite part of the project.

I remember the total apprehension the first time plugged the thing into my pc: “please dont blow up, please dont blow up”

    lol

Most interaction between humans and computers usually happens with the keyboard or mouse. I’ve always been frustrated by those constraints which is why I like exploring input using sound and video. But there’s still more that can be explored with other forms of input and output. People term this area of interaction design “physical computing” or “tangible computing”. So I’m really getting into this right now.

With a few pointers from Mikkel Koser I bought myself a Basic Stamp microcontroller and a Keyspan serial adapter and started playing around with serial input and output.

Then I had the idea of taking a snow globe and wiring it up to control images and sound in Flash using vibration. Check out the prototype of Snow Globe Memories and also read how it was done.
