PowerPoint Must Die

Guilty for crimes against good design: Microsoft PowerPoint. Now you could say ‘Don’t blame the tool’ but the thing is it’s hard for any designer to make PowerPoint turn out anything that looks decent. Fonts look dreadful, the colour pallete is very limited and as for things like guides, forget it. To counteract this, PowerPoint should be bundled with a couple of books. Stop Stealing Sheep should be in there to give marketing execs an idea about what good typography is and how to use it, and secondly a copy of Edward Tufte’s Visual Explanations to show them how to make charts and presentations that look good. But why is PowerPoint so popular? Simple - there hasn’t been an alternative - until now. Apple have done what Adobe should have done years ago and released Keynote - a PowerPoint killer that can use Photoshop files, SWF’s and guess what? It even has guides!
