SPIN at FACT

Tuesday saw the first public preview of magneticNorth’s SPIN project - vinyl being used as a control device for digital media. As part of the Diffraction event at FACT, Manchester’s GKUT performed a 15 minute set using the tools we’ve been creating together as part of the FACT funded project. Wanna see? Check out the video of the first 5 minute set.

But this is only the beginning. While video looks cool, at the end of the day you could control anything - its all just data - so watch this space.

How can you say that you have created a tool that has been available for purchase for many years ?

bertranol, i don’t think brendan claimed his tool was innovative (as in “never done before”)…but i gather that they’ve built it from scratch themselves, rather than using mspinky?

incidentally bren, was this achieved with a sensor on the turntable itself or with frequency analysis and a prepared disc?

(p.s. the tab order on your contact form is a tad illogical and makes keyboard-only access a bit of a pain)

very cool, brendan. i’m also quite keen to know how it works.

It works with mspinky, according to the flickr report of the Diffraction event.

OK, first things first. The quote on Coudal.com about “years of invention etc” is just a quote from the footage we used - nothing more.

Yes we’re using mspinky but we’ve built stuff from scratch in MAX/MSP as part of the FACT funded project. There’s lot more that we’ve done and are doing with the technology that isn’t shown on the video. Like I said this is just the beginning. Mspinky provides a way of getting data from vinyl into the computer. It’s what you then do with it is when it becomes more interesting.

Hope that clears things up.
