The ultimate data

This morning I posted off swabs of my saliva to get my own DNA snapshot from CATGee. In around forty days I’ll get back a DNA profile snapshot, made from key locations in my DNA strand, to use however I want. I think it’s pretty amazing that, even though it may just be a bit of fun, you can now have your DNA processed as easily as buying something by mail order.

Brendan, thats pretty awesome, it’s amazing what companies are up to at the moment, and it certainly would make an interesting and unique gift!

just think of when they start selling the data capture to marcom companies that target your specifc quirks. I’m both intrigued to know my own DNA sequence, and scared shitless about the possible unforseen consequences.

Maybe I’m paranoid, but, if this thing catches-on and everyone starts having their DNA information attached to e-mails and Web sites — would it be possible for someone (somewhere — probably in the future) to abuse or steal this information for illegal identification purposes? We all have unique account/sorting codes at the bank as well as individual social security numbers — but it doesn’t mean we should go around attaching such information to e-mails or on a T-Shirt as the CATGee Web site suggests! It all sounds fascinating — I’m just a bit dubious about how this information should be shared.

Well from what I can gather from CATGee, the id you get back is merely a snapshot of your DNA, made from key points in your DNA strand. While it is unique to you, it can’t be used to do anything dodgy with by other people/companies/evil crims.
