Trying my bloody patience

Last night I was sat on the train when the lady next to me opened up her laptop PC. Nothing unusual about. She did some work. Nothing unusual about that. Then she finished her bit of work and decided she’d play… bloody patience. Christ! All that computing power and the best thing she could think to do was play that pissing boring soul destroying game. Now I know you’re gonna say - she’s just winding down and that’s what she uses to do it. But the thing is why not try and do something creative? Why not write that book you’ve been meaning to write. Or write that poem, that song, that magnum opus that’s been welling up inside you since the time you were born? Oh yeah and now we’re getting 64 bit computers - super computers that can play patience at such a bitchin speed it’s gonna go mental. For gods sake there so much more that computers can do than play a bloody card game. Why doesn’t someone make an alternative to patience that maybe teaches you something or explores your creative self?

Ha!! Well, I never thought of it in that way but you know, people when they reach a certain f#cked up point in their lives loose the creative spark. It’s sad. Just be glad you still have your…

Hate to admit it, but I’d probably play a game or two in her situation. Hate to admit it…

What is it that keeps so many in virtual mental prison? Even if I sit on my down time and write a novel that is complete rubbish, I have to believe it was a better excercise that computer card games.
We have so many tools available and they are going largely unused by the general public.

Thanks for the reminder about patience, I almost forgot about that great game.

;-)

Honestly, does having an abundance of resources imply you’re not reaching your potential unless you’re consuming them at the maximum possible rate?

That’s capitalist consumption to a tee, and it’s what alot of the western world is doing, depleting resources as fast as possible.

PRESSURE: work! earn! spend! repeat!!
CONSUMER ZOMBIE: must …. consume ….

It’s funny Adam how you twisted “explore your creative self” to mean “working for the man”! But the thing is consumption is part of the issue. We’re told to upgrade to more powerful computers and for what? To play simple parlor games or write the occasional letter? Then you look at how software like iDVD and iMovie opens up whole new worlds of possibilities for people, that uses all that power in new ways. That has nothing to do with work work work or Chomskyesque conspiracy theories.

On the occasions that I do go home to see my parents i often find my father on his computer playing card games, far play to him it stimulates his mind more than watching TV, but the funny thing is if I look out of my parents kitchen window I can see my neighbour sat there playing cards on his computer.

This got me thinking maybe there is a national league of computer card games we don’t know about or maybe they are just happy in there little world of relaxation. I mean I don’t think my dad would like me to buy him championship manager 4 for Christmas yet I spend a fair amount of time playing that myself.

So am i as bad as them????

Tim /

I suppose it wasn’t the card game playing I was having a go at. I was just thinking what would happen if we made more people aware of what computers can do for them. I don’t in anyway want to decry game playing in any way shape or form - Christ, I spent my youth playing Defender and Galaga every waking moment when I wasn’t in school and this morning I was playing Super Monkey Ball on my GameBoy Advance!

Bren /

For my dad his computer does everything he wants and when it doesn’t he asks me, but he just likes to play the odd game, like your self with your game boy. If your game boy came with tetras built in would you question why people didn’t play other games when you saw them playing it????

The question is if you asked that lady why she played the game instead of writing her book or poem etc she’d probably have looked blank and gone “never thought of that, might do that tomorrow”

I agree that people do need to expand their creativity more and stop putting off there dreams “I’ll do that when I get home”

As some one great once said “seize the day”

Now why don’t I have patience installed on this machine, oh!! There’s flash, don’t want to play with that, ah!! There’s Photoshop……………

Tim /

Let people do what they do. As long as it does not impinge on you directly then let them be. Many people don’t WANT or NEED to be awoken to the possibilities awaiting. Personal choice, Brendan, the last truly free frontier.

This is the perfect case for a high speed card dealing beast machine.

Because Solitaire is like crack. That poor woman probably just opened it up out of curiosity one day. Then before she knew it she was playing 10, 15 games a day. All the while she’s thinking “I can handle this, I’m just using it to relax a little after work.” Next thing she knows, she’s gone out and bought a laptop so that she can play it wherever the need takes her. She’s started sneaking off to the toilets at work with her Vaio tucked under her jacket for a quick fix. Finally, as her downward spiral edges her nearer to death, she gets a jolting wake-up call from some bloke telling the world about her habit on his website.
I say well done Bren, you’ve probably saved this woman from a fate worse than Minesweeper.

What’s funny is when you see people on their PC, in their own home, playing patience.

Don’t you own a pack of cards you weirdo!

I find it funny, the mental image of a guy sitting on public transit staring aimlessly at a woman only to end up condemning her “wasting” of the resource before her and then posting his schlock onto a weblog.

I also find it funny that this has been such an emotive subject and a great debate. It’s such a shame I had to go and mention it and allow people the chance to comment. Damn the internet and damn the blog culture, damn to 2-way publishing.

Brendan Dawes /

thought i’d say - i totally agree. Right there with you bren

just passing /

emotive subject? nope. great debate? nope again.

Kevin /

That’s your opinion and you are indeed entitled to it, but in that case why even bother writing a reply?

Bren /

Hey don’t knock brendan, at least he has the nerve to post his feelings and views.

I think this was a great run of opinions and i have sparked simular conversation on this topic with mate from different backgrounds over a few beers.

So hey keep it up brendan.

I once saw a snazy bit of ultra portable, compact, technology enabling you to play patience and it all packed down into a unit slightly larger than a mobile phone and slightly smaller than an iPod… about the size of a pack of cards…
