A lot of this stuff is only partly technology… if you’re looking to get acquired, then looking like the other party expects makes it an easier sell.

Rephrased, I think a lot of the internal dialog goes: “Holy Smokes, PooglR just got bought for umpty million, so if I want to sell this thing I made I better make it look like other buyers expect.”

To corrobarate John, if you use the buzzwords, and claim to use the latest, greatest technology, then you stand a better chance of getting venture capital as well as being bought out.

One may think it is a ludicrious proposition, but when people are getting paid millions of dollars for such a simple plan, you can see why people do it. I personally wouldn’t, but some people wish to make money that way.

“We are a Web 2.0 company that utilizes AJAX and are harnessing collective intelligence.” and so on and so forth. Said to investors or potential buyers, you’ve played the game, your app looks like the competitors, and you’re running atop a hyped technology; you’re ripe for being bought out for bling.

web 2.0design and technology is not forward or innovative - it is completely backward-looking. im ashamed of the horrible glitches, errors and design of these sites.

i have several entries on this.

HERESY, burn you in hell you unbeliever! Only herotics and witches would denounce the “Church of Web 2.0″ – burn him, BURN HIM!!!

i think that the issue here is that the social/mashup/user contributed/etc technology just happened at the same time as a new design fad, and in many people’s minds the two have become intermingled. give it time…the design will evolve, but the technology will persist.

btw: your tab order here is screwy…tabbing from this textarea takes me all the way to the top of the document, rather than the POST button, among other things…

What is Web 2.0? I’ve got Windows 3.1 - will that do?

    John /

In trems of design its just a bad term for a fad, I’m still waiting for airport signage and 45 degree arrows to take off again.

But in terms of money, i think the venture capalists are dusting off their cheque books, Internet Bubble 2.ohhh anyone?

Web2.0 killed the New Media Design Star…

Okay, so it doesn’t fit the rhyme, but you get the idea. There’s a tremendous off balance in the whole movement. “Web2.0″ represents 2 things to me: poorly designed, but incredibly functional sites (craigslist, google, etc…), and just plain gawdy, cookie-cutter sites with more functionality than any user really ever uses ([insert 2 of 4389204805732 possible sites here]).

The Web2.0 movement is to design what iTunes is to record stores, and what MTV was to pirate radio. It’s was AIM is to phone calls. What cell phones were to … okay, I’ll stop.

Great post, Brenden. And great job on the flickr tools!

Here are a few links that I have found that take the piss out of the Web2.0 style - I also note that the wikipedia description of Web2.0 notes the similarity in style of web2.0 sites>

There’s something I need your help with because it baffles me no end. This whole web 2.0 thing. I’m down with what this approach to web technologies can deliver for the web - I believe user experiences on a day to day level can and are better because of them, or because of the considered use of them. But what I absolutely don’t get is why web 2.0 style apps (if there is such a thing) has to adhere to a certain look. I mean I just don’t get it.

It’s kind of like using the technology of the internal combustion engine, but always having to design the look of the vehicle in exactly the same way. Rounded buttons, big fonts, shades blah blah, 2.whatever. Jesus. Why should the technology under the bonnet dictate what goes on at the front end, the bit that people use.

So feel free to explain why that should be the case in majority of cases. Maybe it’s because you’re not in the cool 2.0 club if you don’t follow the fascist 2.0 look n feel? Well I’ve never been into clubs of any kind. Like Groucho Marx once said “PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON’T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER”.
