One of my favourite albums, and one that is regarded as a milestone in jazz is Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue. I’ve been playing around for some time with various techniques to visualize sound, but beyond the transient effects offered by software like iTunes, which are nice, but for me always seem disconnected from the actual feel of the sound.
So I thought to myself what if you could see the notes coming from the instruments of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the others? What if they were firing their musical notes at a canvas which would build into a painting for that track in a kind of Jackson Pollack style?
Eventually I ended up with these six pieces, each one representing each specific track, with the frequency content controlling where the blobs of paint are placed on the canvas. Each painting so to speak is a unique representation of that performance, yet the six also go together to represent this ground breaking record.
Track 1 So What

Track 3 Blue in Green

Did you do this in flash or processing, and what does the source code look like (if you don’t mind sharing)? Thanks,
